What is Cyclocross?

Cyclocross, often abbreviated CX or Cross, is a form of racing that combines elements of road cycling and mountain biking, with some obstacles thrown in for good measure.   Races take place on a short, closed circuit, 1.5 to 2 miles, that includes a variety of surfaces like grass, dirt, mud, sand, and pavement.

Riders often have to dismount to carry their bikes over barriers, over steep hills, or even up steps.  Cross is a fall and winter sport, so weather often plays a roll.   Some races are dry, but many races involve a lot of mud!

Cross bikes resemble a road bike but have knobby tires and more clearance for mud.  (Did we mention MUD?)   That being said, many you do NOT need a special bike to start.   Many beginners start by racing mountain bikes.    Some of the more competitive levels of racing do require a cross specific bike, however you can start with whatever bike you have available.

Cross is a very spectator-friendly sport.   Due to the short laps and many twists and turns, typically most if not the entire cross can be seen from a central viewing area.   Cros races are also very community driven, often with a festive vibe.   (Think cowbells, bullhorns, costumes, and friendly heckling.)
